TRANSPORTATION IN BHUTAN
If you consider a trip to Bhutan and want to understand better how to get around the city, we will explain the different types of transportation facilities available to tourists. For those who are tariff paying tourists, transportation will be arranged by your tour operators. We use SUV cars for 1 to 3 people, a minibus is hired for 4 to 10 people, and Toyota coaster buses are used for larger groups. For regional tourists, transportation is a little more flexible, and you can choose to use taxis or buses. However,Bhutan has limited bus services. It requires booking to be done in advance. You can also choose to search for taxis or even book one for an entire day or the entire trip. There are certain places in Bhutan you can reach through domestic air services. The three domestic airports in Bhutan are:
- Gelephu (south)
- Bumthang (northern/ central)
- Yonphula (east)
For those planning to visit Bhutan during the summer months, please bear in mind that mudslides and landslides sometimes cause road blockages due to heavy rainfall. In this case, it is possible to avail helicopter rides for some of the tourist attractions in Bhutan.
Taxis and buses are tricky to get. Also, the average driving speed in Bhutan is 40-50km/h. The best option for you would be to arrange your transportation with licensed Bhutanese tour operators only.
